# CDS FAQs: Simplifying UK Customs for Traders

**What Is CDS?**  
CDS (Customs Declaration Service) is the UK’s modern system for handling import and export declarations, replacing the outdated CHIEF system.

**When Do You Need a Customs Declaration?**

* Shipping goods outside the UK from England, Scotland, or Wales.
    
* Sending goods to non-EU destinations from Northern Ireland.
    
* Shipping to the EU from Northern Ireland.
    

**Why the Shift to CDS?**  
CDS offers better flexibility and compliance with current customs regulations under the Union Customs Code (UCC).

**Important Deadline**  
Exporters must migrate to CDS by **June 4, 2024**.

**Who Must Register?**  
All importers need to register for CDS, even if they use brokers.

**What Must Be Declared?**

* Goods worth over £873 or weighing more than 1000 kg.
    
* Restricted items and excise goods.
    

**Required Import Documents**

* EORI number, invoices, packing lists, and certificates like the certificate of origin or health documents may be necessary.
    

**Using a Broker?**
